The Govt. of India has shown importance on developing a science and technology literate society as shown by Science, Technology & Innovation (STI) Policy, 2013. Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India has established Science Cities, Science Centres and Innovation Hubs across India using National Council of Science Museums (NCSM) as the implementing agency. Several science centres were also initiated in north-eastern region of India during the 1990’s. Science Centres under NCSM cover several objectives like creating awareness and enhancing public understanding in the process of science and technology, to supplement science education given in schools and colleges and to organize various out-of school educational activities to cultivate a spirit of scientific enquiry and creativity among the students. Today, NCSM forms the largest network of science centres and museums in the world under single administrative umbrella, with A.D. Choudhury as the Director General. Currently, there are 47 science museums/centres spread across the country and others like Mobile Science Exhibition (MSE) units for rural areas etc.
